Rupees now accepted as payment option for TOEFL

 Date: 21st May 2012

PUNE: Students now have the option to use Indian rupees as a payment method for the TOEFL iBT® test. The new payment choice is available to test takers by selecting the credit card option through the TOEFL® online registration system.

The Euro, Yen and Won are also now accepted as payment through the online registration system. For many Indian students, this has the potential for cost-savings as payment is no longer limited to US dollars. Indian TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test takers paying in rupees will no longer incur currency exchange fees charged by most debit and credit card companies.

"This enhancement to the TOEFL registration process was based on feedback from test takers and illustrates another step ETS has taken to make the testing experience more convenient and efficient for students throughout India," said David Hunt, vice president and chief operating officer of ETS's Global Division, in a statement issued.

The statement said that it was part of a wider goal to accept other local currencies around the world to increase access for students. In November, ETS announced yet another change for test takers by condensing the testing format of the reading section to a maximum of four reading passages. The reading section is no longer divided into separately timed parts, rather all passages and questions are made available in a single block of time allowing test takers to pace themselves through the entire reading section.

The TOEFL test is the most widely recognized English-language assessment used by more than 8,500 institutions to assess English proficiency. It is the most accepted English-language assessment worldwide. The assessment measures an individual's ability to use and understand English and evaluates how well an individual is able to integrate listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. The TOEFL test is used in more than 130 countries by academic institutions, scholarship committees, government agencies and accrediting agencies to measure English proficiency.
