CEPT finds place in Indo-US consortia on green energy

Date: 22nd May 2012

Ahmedabad-based Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University has got a shot in the arm as the varsity has been included in as Indo-US consortia on clean energy by the US Department of Energy, Berkeley.

As part of the consortia, teams from India and the US will bring in experts together under Indo-US Joint Energy Research and Development Centre (JCERDC) worth $125 million.

For the implementation of the joint programme, two Centres of Excellence (CoE) have been recently awarded to CEPT by the Gujarat Department of Industries. Each CoE worth Rs 10 crore would focus on energy and environment in Gujarat with emphasis on sustainable industrial development.

The activities undertaken by the CoE will not only carry out research works but also focus on policy reviews that will guide the state government on energy generation, pricing policies and environmental issues in both national and international context.

“After the final approval from the US over the consortia last month, the Gujarat Department of Industries awarded two CoE to CEPT on April 25. The three-year project would cover all the possible aspects of green energy and environment,” said Prof R Parthasarathy from Faculty of Planning and Public Policy at CEPT University. He is leading the project.

Under CoE, CEPT University aims to go beyond the three-year funding from the government. The three major focus areas would be green energy where energy saving potential of buildings, industry, local bodies and in generation and transmission process will be studied.

“The second area will cover sustainable settlements. The focus will be on greener buildings with state-of-the-art energy, water, sensing and monitoring system. These would be of great importance to Gujarat where focus has to be towards green industrial parks, townships and industrial communities. Understanding and application of sustainability principles at micro and macro levels in the state would be important focus area of the CoE in energy and environment,” said Prof R Parthasarathy.

The third area will be energy-water-environment link. “With collaboration with the US’s Energy Department of Berkeley, we intend to examine issues such as contaminants of water sources and protection of estuaries and coastal regions,” he said.

As per the terms of the consortia, researchers will leverage their expertise and resources in solar technology, advanced biofuels and building efficiency to unlock the huge potential of clean energy technologies that can reduce energy use, cut dependence on foreign oil, and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources.

Three leading US institutions have partnered with as many Indian institutions — the Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore, the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology-Hyderabad and CEPT University-Ahmedabad. The US institutions include National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the University of Florida, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). CEPT University will lead the

Indian team that include some of the other national institutions including International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad; Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur; Indian Institute of Technology Bombay; Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. While, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will lead the US team that includes Oak Ridge National Laboratory; University of California Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and others.
