Washington: Considered to be a "force to reckon with", the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin's (AAPI) new leadership team is now aiming to play an active role in enhancing India US relationship in the health sector.

"As members of AAPI, we have not forgotten our roots and are engaged in several activities such as conducting Indo-US Healthcare Summit in Kochi this year that will blaze new trail in healthcare sector in India and will pave way for new frontiers in public private partnership," new AAPI president, Dr Narendra Kumar, said.

An Otolaryngologist of Kerala origin, practicing medicine in the state of Michigan, Dr Kumar assumed office as the president of the prestigious American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) during its recent 30th annual Convention in Long Beach, California last month.

One of the largest professional bodies in the US, AAPI represents 45,000 physicians and more than 15,000 medical students and residents.

"AAPI today has become a force to reckon with. Its stellar role has come in for appreciation with the US political leaders and law makers," said Dr Kumar.

"I recognize the tremendous role that is being played by AAPI in promoting friendship between India and the United States. We will carry on this responsibility of ours with greater commitment," he said.

He said the organisation is into education of physicians both in US and India and providing best medical care to patients besides maintaining legislative presence in Washington DC.

Dr Kumar has been instrumental in establishing an Electronic Learning Resource center in various medical colleges in Kerala.

The members of the new executive committee consist of Dr Jayesh Shah, president-elect (2013-2014); Dr Ravi Jahagirdar, vice president; Dr Seema Jain, secretary; Dr Ajay Lodha, treasurer and Dr Durgesh Mankikar, chairman, board of trustees.

"With its extensive knowledge network, AAPI could advance the science of healing all over the world," Dr Shah said.

As a premier organization, he wants to see AAPI being "respected for it's service and advancement of medicine".

An active member of his alma mater, RNT Medical College, Udaipur, Dr Lodha continues to help in strategic planning of giving back and helping communities in the US as well as in Rajasthan.

He wants "AAPI to be a platform in helping our young physicians coming from India to seek residencies and to help them in settlement and to get jobs".
