Rare honour for Presidency University, thanks to JC Bose

Aug 27, 2012

At a time when Presidency University has been striving to uplift its overall infrastructure, it received a brand new feather on its cap that's been a long time coming.

Former professor Jagdish Chandra Bose, on being belatedly recognised by the international community,
added another to the University's many accolades.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a professional association in the United States, has awarded the University with a rare honour, a milestone plaque for Bose's legendary work on the 'millimetre wave' in the field of physics.

"IEEE is awarding our university with this rare honour for AJC Boses's work on his famous millimetre wave. We heard from their officials about this prestigious award about a month ago," said vice-chancellor Professor Malabika Sarkar.

Presidency is the first University in India, and among a handful worldwide, which has been facilitated with this rare award by IEEE.

"This is the first time an award like this is being given to an Indian university," said the V-C.

Bose had been provided with a personal laboratory inside the department of physics in the university. The head of the department of physics, Dr Prodyot Kumar Roy, said that the initiation of this honour started in 2007.

"We, the physicist, try detecting microwaves through oscillators and Bose's device was able to generate nano waves, whose penetrating capacity is much higher than German psychicist Hertz's device. Bose's device was much smaller, more accurate and competent in detecting microwaves," said Roy.

According to him, the first theoretical paper by Bose, which comprised sketches by the physicist of the device on millimetre wave, was published in 'Proceedings of the Royal Society' in 1897.

Since then physicists conducting any research on millimetre waves have always considered Bose as the godfather of the concept.

Bose's work on millimetre wave has a strong connection with the communication system in today's world.

"His work has got its practical applications in today's cell phones and mobile telecommunication technologies," said the V-C.

However, the university has already received its first honourable plaque by the Royal Society of Chemistry, in memory of Indian chemist and academician Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, on January 31, 2012.

Dr Peter Staeker from IEEE will inaugurate the milestone plaque on the University campus on September 15.

Eminent educators like Professor DP Sengupta from the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) and physicist Sabyasachi Bhattacharya will be present at the felicitation ceremony.

The replica of the 60GHZ microwave apparatus that Bose crafted during his research in 1897 is still inside the University's physics department.
