Zachariah P Zachariah, a prominent cardiologist and public servant has been elected as the chairman of the Florida Board of Medicine, reports Vancouver Desi of Hindustan Times. “This is a great honor for me, my family and the South Asian community,” Dr Zachariah told Desi.
Dr Zachariah is the first Indian-American chairman of any Medical State Board in the U.S.
He has also served the post of President of Florida Heart Association since 1986 and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Miami since 1985.
Zachariah, a renowned philanthropist and Republican Party stalwart was honoured with the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honour in the year 1998 and the Ellis lsland Legends award in 2000.
Zacharia has been part of numerous boards such as the Florida State Board of Governors, the President’s White House Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. He has also worked as a US Representative to the World Health Organisation in Geneva.
Zachariah holds an M.B.B.S. degree from Armed Forces Medical College in Poona and he completed his medical residency at St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey and received fellowship in cardiology from Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio
