The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited proposals from universities for introducing “Innovation Universities” scheme. Under the scheme, UGC will provide financial support to universities for innovative teaching/educational programmes; innovative research Programmes and organisational innovations during 12th Five Year Plan.
Universities with Grade ‘A’ by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) and having at least 10 years of standing can apply under the scheme.
Universities will be given a one-time grant of up to Rs. 25 crores for innovative project and would be provided with Rs.25 up to going up to 100 crores for innovative programme. UGC has also planned to give “Innovation University”, a grant from Rs.100 crores up to a maximum of Rs. 300 crores for a period of five years.
The basic objective is to promote innovative ways of learning, sharing and collectively growing within and without. Under this scheme, innovation will include, introduction of new types of degrees and courses; innovation in curricula including evaluation and innovative methods of internationalization of teaching programmes.
The proposed scheme will not cover the up-gradation of the overall infrastructure of the university; creation of new departments and centres in the established disciplines and supporting professional associations and bodies of researchers.
