JRE School of Management, Greater Noida, has tied up with marketing guru Philip Kotler to establish the first ‘Kotler Centre of Excellence’ (KCoE) in India. To be hosted at JRE, KCoE will undertake cutting-edge research in marketing and hopes to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Harpreet Singh, president, JRE Group of Institutions, spoke to edex on this development.
What does this centre and the new collaboration offer?
There is a lacuna in the best marketing institute space in India, and we think we are well positioned to fill this gap. This new collaboration offers an opportunity for us to start a first-of-its-kind centre of excellence. India, with its large population base and a large, growing economy, presents unique challenges for marketers and policy-makers. The need of the hour is not just management colleges which can churn out large number of managers each year, but also the development of a deeper understanding and research to find solutions to our unique set of problems. The centre would be manifold with the aim to benefit students, marketers, policy makers and the underprivileged section of the society.
Please elaborate more on the centre.
The focus and objective of KCoE would be to conduct research on issues and opportunities at the bottom of the pyramid which is the need of the hour, both for marketing experts and policymakers in India. KCoE will also design and offer management development programmes, certification or diploma courses for corporate executives. These courses will be developed with active participation of renowned professors from across the world along with Indian professors and marketing practitioners. KCoE would also have a social incubator component which would develop projects and resources for people who are at risk of social exclusion because of their socio-economic backgrounds — lower income and education levels. Linkages with other Kotler Centres of Excellence across the world will also be developed.
Will students get to interact with Prof Kotler?
While special classes would not be given by Kotler himself at the institute because of logistical issues, there would be regular guidance from him for research. We are looking at arranging webinars for our students.
Is this the only such initiative in India?
Yes. This will be the first exclusive KCoE in India. There has been a previous joint initiative known as ‘Kotler-Srinivasan Centre for excellence in marketing’ by Great Lakes institute of Management, Chennai. However, ‘Kotler Center of Excellence’ at JRE school of Management is the first exclusive Philip Kotler Center in India.
