5 prominent Indian academicians who have headed major schools in US universities

Mind matters! Even as Indians make their presence felt globally over a wide spectrum o fields ranging from science, technology and innovation to administrative roles, many academicians are making a mark for themselves in major universities. 


When Subra Suresh took over as the President of Carnegie Mellon University, US, on July 1, he joined a growing list of Indian-origin academics taking leadership roles in top global business schools. We profile five such Indians for you:

 

Subra Suresh

Designation: President, Carnegie Mellon University

Subra Suresh is the first Indian-origin president of Carnegie Mellon and also one of the few from that set to have the rare honour of heading a top global university. Before this job, he was the first Asian to head the National Science Foundation (NSF), the $7 billion agency that funds all non-medical fundamental research in America. 

He was also the first Asia-born dean of an MIT school, and the youngest - and the first Indian - professor to be recruited to the engineering faculty at Brown University. 

In between all this, he conducted top-notch research in material science and engineering, which brought him a string of awards.

 

Pradeep Khosla

Designation: Chancellor, University of California, San Diego 

Pradeep Khosla, an internationally renowned electrical and computer engineer, began his tenure as UC San Diego's eighth Chancellor on August 1, 2012. 

Khosla previously served as Dean of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. There, he set the strategic direction for undergraduate and graduate education and research, and was elected University Professor, the highest distinction a faculty member could achieve. 

He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, and his master's and doctoral degrees in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon.

 

Nitin Nohria

Designation: Dean, Harvard Business School 

Nitin Nohria became the tenth dean of Harvard Business School on 1 July 2010. He previously served as co-chair of the Leadership Initiative, Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Development, and Head of the Organizational Behavior unit. 

Prior to joining the Harvard Business School faculty in July 1988, Dean Nohria received his Ph.D. in Management from the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

 

Srilata Aaheer

Designation: Dean, Management School, University of Minnesota 

Srilata A Zaheer was named dean of the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management in March 2012. She became the first woman of Indian descent to be appointed the head of a top US business school. 

Called Sri by peers and colleagues, Zaheer joined Carlson, among top 30 business schools in the US, in 1991. Zaheer, graduated from Madras University and obtained her MBA from IIM Ahmedabad in 1975.

 

Soumitra Dutta

Designation: Dean, Cornell University Business School 

Soumitra Dutta, a professor of business and technology and founder and faculty director of a new media and technology innovation lab at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, became the eleventh dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University on July 1, 2012. 

Dutta received a B.Tech. in electrical engineering and computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology and an M.S. in business administration, an M.S. in computer science and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley.
